Exile Volleyball is saddened to announce the passing of one of our founders Kevin Walters.
Originally from Buffalo New York, Kevin found his way to Pittsburgh while serving in the US Army.
Kevin started his volleyball coaching career as one of the original Renaissance "Shag Dads". He then moved into a coaching role as an assistant with a 14-under team and as the JV coach at St. Alphonsus.
Kevin started the girl's volleyball program at North Catholic High School in 2001 and within four years had the team in the WPIAL finals. After a short stint at Mars High School Kevin settled in at Bishop Canevin where he took over a team that had gone 1-18 the previous year.
That first season his team started a 14 year consecutive run of making the WPIAL playoffs that includes 10 consecutive WPIAL Championship appearances, including 2020.
In that run Kevin's teams won 6 WPIAL Championships and 1 PIAA Championship.
Kevin started the first Pittsburgh area summer girl's volleyball league in 1998 and ran it through 2019 with as many as 24 high school teams competing each summer.
Kevin also ran numerous camps for junior high aged girls.
Kevin also ran camps for high school aged girls through colleges such as Georgetown, College of Charleston, Loyola of Maryland and Virginia Tech.
Many high school players made the jump to college volleyball as a result of Kevin's efforts.
Most importantly he treated each of his players as if they were his own family.
Three photos of Kevin after winning the WPIAL Championship in a recent years depict how we will always remember him.
